MPKS to weed out underperforming contractors

KUCHING: The Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS) will not tolerate contractors with sub-standard work and performance.

MPKS chairman Datuk Peter Minos said the council takes public complaints and grouses very seriously, whether it is rubbish collection, drain and street cleaning, desludging, cutting grass, or other council works.

He pointed out that MPKS is fed-up with recalcitrant and difficult contractors who do shoddy and disappointing work, giving excuse after excuse.

“The public pay the council rates and the public deserve the best from the council and we do not want contractors to fail us all.

“MPKS will do all the necessary to monitor and, where proven and where necessary, weed out the defaulting contractors. If all fails, no more contracts to be given to the really bad ones, once the facts and proof are fully and clearly established,” he said.

He said MPKS will meet and engage with its contractors regularly, reminding them of their contract terms and conditions.

“If contractors do their work well, follow the specifications and time schedules, MPKS can then focus on doing the development part like building stalls for small traders who do roadside trading, improving the public markets, landscaping, greening around, doing something on open spaces, and so on.

“That is why we do not want to spend too much time running after and supervising the many contractors. We want to do more on the development side. If not, there will be little progress,” he said.

He added MPKS seeks to live up to its motto of ‘Clean, Green, Safe and Beautiful’.

“Always moving and developing Samarahan as a place of knowledge, fine residence, good living, creating opportunities, and such like,” he added.
