KUCHING: The police have seized various imitation firearms or ‘gel blasters’ from an indoor sports centre in Kota Sentosa on Jan 30.

Padawan district police chief Supt Aidil Bolhassan said the 37-year-old owner of the premise was also arrested during the 5.45pm raid.

“The police have seized 14 units of the imitation rifles which resemble an AK47 assault rifle and seven units which resemble pistols,” said Aidil yesterday.

Gel blasters resemble airsoft rifles, but instead of BB pellets, they are designed to fire sodium polyacrylate balls – a type of polymer that absorbs water – and rupture on impact.

The police also discovered that the gel blasters were kept behind a payment counter where they are rented for RM15 to RM25 each to customers.

Aidil said the suspect purchased the gel blasters online directly from China for a price of between RM350 to RM500 for the rifles and RM100 to RM150 for the pistols.

Aidil also said the centre provides customers with 400 gel pellets for each round of play.

The case he said is being investigated under Section 36 of the Fire Arms Act 1960.
