SIBU: Swan City Recreational Club Sibu (SCRCS) secretary Danny Wong passed away yesterday morning at his home at Delta Estate. He was 70.
SCRCS chairman Mark Yeo described the demise of Wong, popularly known as Haygu Seng, as a great loss to the snooker fraternity.
“Wong was instrumental and very passionate in looking after the development of snooker sport in the state in the past decades.
“His death will surely bring about a great impact on the development of the sport,” he said.
Wong was the founder of Sibu Division Billiards and Snooker Association (SDBSA), one of the most active snooker associations in the state and acted as the vice president in 1995.
In 2000, he took over as chairman after his predecessor Datuk Lau Cheng Kiong stepped down.
A popular figure and a respected pioneer, Wong was very concerned about the survival of snooker ever since the sport was brought to Sarawak in the 1970s.
Under his leadership, SDBSA organised many divisonal and state tournaments through the 1990s and 2000s such as Sarawak Closed and Sarawak Invitational.
He was most passionate about snooker development. He once described the sport “as his second love life and the snooker centre his second home.”
Yeo said it was the wish of Wong to get snooker incorporated as a school co-curricular activity.
“However, it appears that his wish will remain unfulfilled.”
