MIRI: Elected representatives and grassroots leaders, including the ordinary people, should work together in order for Sarawak to continue to prosper with lesser disputes and more love for each other.

Piasau assemblyman Datuk Sebastian Ting said this is in view of the political scene and the changing economy that has put Malaysia in a difficult and challenging situation, particularly at times when unruly slandering and untruthful rumours are affecting the people.

“Therefore, it is vital for all to work together as one to overcome these obstacles. Leaders and citizens must work hand-in-hand to sustain the peace and harmony through tolerance, unity and mutual understanding,” he stated in his Chinese New Year message yesterday.

Ting, who is also SUPP secretary general, pointed out the harmonious atmosphere during Chinese New Year truly reflects Malaysia as a special multicultural country.

“The Sarawak government always strives to strengthen the friendship and brotherhood among its people, knowing that maintaining harmony is the pillar to prosperous development and nation building.”

Similarly, he said the people of Sarawak have pride and should always be proud of being part of nation building.

Despite small groups of mischief-makers, he said most Sarawakians embrace harmony and solidarity.

“Miri, our beautiful home, that had transformed from a sleepy fishing village into a modern city with all the modern infrastructures now, has become home to many people from different races and religious backgrounds.

“Every Mirian has a role to play in protecting and maintaining the city to be better. The local authority, on the other hand, needs to ensure that Miri is ever-ready at its best as a tourism city,
with improved city infrastructure and safety, making it a merrier, culturally rich and colourful city attracting curious visitors.”
