Lim briefs employers on EIS for foreign workers.

SARIKEI: Employers hiring foreign workers but excluding domestic servants are required to register them (employees) with Social Security Organization (Socso) effective Jan 1 this year.

They are also required to contribute to the Employment Injury Scheme (EIS) under the Employees’ Social Security Act, 1969 (Act 4) to provide social protection for foreign workers, said Socso Sarikei branch manager, Fenny Lim, when briefing employers on the matter here yesterday.

The rate of EIS contribution is 1.25 per cent of the insured monthly wages which must be paid by the employers, she said, adding that all principals or immediate employers were required to contribute starting Jan 1 this year.

New (foreign) workers who have valid passport and special pass are eligible to register under EIS.

Existing foreign workers who have valid employment pass and temporary employment visit pass or valid employment pass are also eligible to be registered under EIS. Those who are still covered by Foreign Workers Compensation Scheme (FWCS) have to register under the new scheme immediately upon expiry of their FWCS, or the latest by Dec 31, this year.

“This means that by Jan 1, 2020, all employers must register their foreign workers with Socso, regardless of coverage under FWSC,” Lim said.

Employers can register online via Automated Socso Integrated System (Assist) portal or by completing Foreign Workers Registration Form and submit it to the nearest Socso office.
