KOTA KINABALU: Infrastructure Development Minister, Datuk Peter Anthony has promptly terminated the service of a contractor appointed to maintain and repair broken sewerage pipes from the Likas Bay to the sewerage treatment plant in Inanam.

Speaking to reporters at the Likas Bay sewerage treatment plant today, Peter said that the contractor has not repaired the broken pipes for nine months resulting in the spillover of the sewerage into drains and causing discomfort to the surrounding population.

He explained that only one contractor was involved in the project and that the contractor was appointed by the previous government.

“The termination is carried out because the contractor has failed to carry out his duties,” said Peter.

He also said that he has instructed the Public Works Department to immediately look for expert contractors in the field to take over the work.

“This will incur a large cost. We will ask the Chief Minister for an immediate approval,” he said.

Peter added that the cost that would be incurred is estimated to be more than RM20 million for the 10 kilometers distance.

“We will appoint a contractor to carry out the survey work to check on the broken pipes,” he said.

The long-term solution would involve replacing the old and broken pipes, he said.
