KUCHING: The number of dengue cases reported from Jalan Sekama here has risen to 15, since two locations there were declared as dengue outbreak zones, on Jan 23 and Feb 11 this year, respectively.

According to Health Department Sarawak, there are 12 cases involving neighbourhoods along the main Jalan Sekama, and three from Jalan Sekama Utara.

“To curb the spread of dengue, all residents and owners of premises in this area (Sekama) are required to clear their surroundings on a weekly basis, preventing them from becoming potential breeding grounds for the Aedes mosquito,” said Health Department Sarawak director Dr Jamilah Hashim in a statement issued yesterday.

She said to control the outbreak, the department is urging the public, especially residents along Jalan Sekama, to clear and dispose of discarded items that store stagnant water.

“Residents are also told to empty, drain or cover all things that can and may hold water, as well as to use aerosol insect spray to kill adult mosquitoes in their houses or business premises.

“Those who are feeling feverish or showing symptoms of the dengue infection such as high fever, severe headaches, pain behind the eyes, severe joint and muscle pains, fatigue, feeling of nausea and vomiting, must consult medical care immediately.”
