SIBU: Several closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras will be installed at the west bank here to curb the increasing number of  robbery and theft cases that have been occurring in the area of late.

Sibu MP Oscar Ling said barring any unforeseen circumstances, the CCTVs should be installed within the next six months.

“Hopefully, once we have installed them, we would be able to improve the security situation in the west bank,” he told a press conference here yesterday morning.

Ling was referring to the recent spate of robberies and other theft cases, which had caused sleepless nights among the residents.

In the latest incident that occurred on Thursday, an elderly woman was attacked and robbed of RM1,000, a handphone and other sundry items after she had just opened her stall for business.

Last month, a grocery store in Sungai Bidut was also robbed, with properties worth about RM4,000 taken away from the premises.

Ling said he would conduct a dialogue with the police to determine the strategic points to install the CCTVs.

He said the police had already identified three strategic points – Sungai Sadit ferry point, Tanjung Manis and Igan Bridge – all along the west bank, to monitor the movement of people.

Ling said the police had also increased their patrol in the areas to thrice per day in attempt to reduce the crime

rate. He added that several people living in the area had also set up a people’s volunteers group to beef up security in the area.
