KUCHING: United People’s Party (UPP) secretary-general George Lo said it is illegal for members to use the proposed new name Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB).

“What I can confirm is that the name change of United People’s Party to Parti Sarawak Bersatu has not yet been approved by the Registrar of Societies (RoS). As such, our party name and logo remain unchanged as it is not legal for us to use the new name at this stage,” said Lo in a statement yesterday.

“With regards to newspaper reports on what Datuk Joseph Entulu Belaun allegedly said in a closed door meeting with his supporters in Kanowit (on Saturday), I do not wish to comment until I have found out the facts for myself,” he said, referring to the former Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) deputy president, former Selangau MP and former minister in the Prime Minister’s Department.

Entulu was quoted as saying that PSB will contest in several seats in the coming state election.

Entulu, however, did not indicate his status when making such remarks inside a restaurant in Kanowit on Saturday.

Therefore, it is still not clear if he is a registered member of any political party after his sacking with four other party supreme council members on the eve of Nomination Day for the May 9 general election last year.

The sacking effectively disqualified him from using the Barisan Nasional (BN) ticket to stand in Selangau. He was booted out of the party because PRS found him and the four other party supreme council members guilty of undermining the party.

After BN Sarawak quit the BN fold weeks after the last parliamentary election, UPP decided to change its name to PSB but thus far it is still awaiting approval from the RoS.
