SEBUYAU: Assistant Minister of Coastal Road Datuk Julaihi Narawi says he will continue with the Newspaper in Education (NIE) programme in schools in Sebuyau constituency.
According to him, the programme is important to enhance the standard of English among the students, without ignoring Bahasa Malaysia.
He points out that providing huge allocation for the programme is not a problem as it benefits the school-children.
Under the NIE programme, the schools – comprising 19 primary schools and one secondary school – in Sebuyau get copies of The Borneo Post daily.
Julaihi said more than RM100,000 is allocated annually for the programme, which has entered its fourth year.
“Besides Mathematics and Science, English is always the ‘killer’ subject, and for this reason the NIE programme will continue to help our school children to improve proficiency in the language,” the Sebuyau assemblyman said at the closing of Sebuyau Education Seminar 2019 on Saturday.

Julaihi praised the teachers for fully utilising the NIE programme for other purposes like becoming reading materials for the school-children to know other happenings in Sarawak.
He commended the effort of the teachers in the area in holding the seminar, and hoped that it be continued in the future.
He regarded the seminar as a vital platform to share ideas on how to improve academic performance of the school-children.
He also said schools in Sebuyau are now connected by roads, unlike in some places where the teachers would have to travel several hours by boat.
Adding on, Julaihi said he would continue to allocate RM10,000 annually to the parent-teacher associations (PTAs) of all primary schools in Sebuyau to carry out educational activities.
