KUCHING: Fifteen fatal road accidents were recorded during ‘Ops Selamat 14’, which ran from Jan 29 to Feb 12, in connection with the Lunar New Year period.
The number represented a reduction of two cases – or 11.8 per cent – from ‘Ops Selamat 12’ carried out during the same period last year, said Sarawak Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department in a statement yesterday.
“Throughout Ops Selamat 14, 15 fatal (accident) cases were recorded, versus 17 recorded during Ops Selamat 12,” it said.
The department also said of the 15 cases, 11 – or 73.3 per cent – involved motorcyclists and pillion riders.
The total number of road accidents recorded during the 15-day operation this year was 742 cases, it added.
“This figure showed a drop of 20 cases, or 2.6 per cent, from the total of 762 cases last year,” said the department.
