SIBU: Bintulu MP Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing hit out at Pelawan assemblyman David Wong yesterday for making false promises on the repair of the Pan Borneo Highway construction near Selangau.

He regarded Wong’s statement before Chinese New Year that the stretch of road would be repaired in 48 hours for the convenience of those returning for the festive celebration as purely a political show to please the people.

Tiong said: “Not just the 48 hours of road repair mentioned by David Wong is over; the whole Chinese New Year celebration is over, and the site of the road repair linking Sibu and Bintulu remains in the same frustrating state. There has never been no improvement.’’

Tiong added that Wong’s statement had angered travellers who had to drive along this frustrating stretch of the road.

“I myself passed through this stretch during the Chinese New Year. It was as bad as before.’’

Tiong said before the Chinese New Year, a group of Pakatan Harapan politicians led by Wong had brought the contractor and pressmen to supervise the site.

“What is ridiculous was they had inspected a different site where the stretch of road had been partially completed, and not the site where the road is in bad shape.’’

He questioned Wong whether he was playing a joke.

“Where is the stretch that you said had been completed in 48 hours?” he asked Wong.

Tiong said he had repeatedly stressed that safety along the stretch of road at the construction site has not been adhered to, adding the situation remained as exasperating as before.

He said the contractor just refilled the sunken section and tar-selaed the surface.

He observed that similar completed road projects in Peninsular Malaysia were never damaged and questioned: ‘’Why this only happened to the Pan Borneo Highway construction? Why did road construction here keep collapsing? Has its safety been taken into account in the construction?’’
