SIBU: In its objective to green up Sibu Jaya Township, Distrepark Sdn Bhd recently gave 40 bucida saplings to the parent-teacher association (PTA) of SK Sibu Jaya to plant around the school.

The master developer for Sibu Jaya Township targets to plant 9,999 saplings in the township to green up the area this year.

It hopes to work with all parties, especially Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC), to achieve the target.

Its previous target of 8,888 trees was achieved last year, marked by the planting a bucida sapling at Sibu Jaya Timur Lane 1 in August by Minister of Housing and Local Government Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian.

A councillor of SRDC, Kong Yii Tee, who presented the bucida saplings to the PTA, praised the school and the developer for working together in the tree planting campaign.

“I also found out that pupils were given lessons on how to care for trees, to appreciate trees and to keep our environment clean, green and safe,” she said, adding it was a good thing that children pick up the culture of caring for the environment at a young age.

She assured the PTA that she and her fellow councillors would always lend their support for such events and looked forward to seeing this township achieve the target of 9,999 saplings planted.

With the latest addition planted by SK Sibu Jaya, the number of saplings planted this year is now 761.
