KUCHING: The healthcare industry is facing such a great shortage of qualified personnel, especially in the Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) field, so much so that fresh graduates are snapped up quickly by both the private and public sectors.

“The Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology provides the academic background and technical skills necessary to enter the healthcare system as a practising medical laboratory technician,” said SEGi College Sarawak programme coordinator, Angela Huam in a press release.

There are about 400 public and private hospitals in need of people with this qualification, in addition to the numerous clinics, medical laboratories and pharmacies, which also require the services of these experts.

“The programme integrates knowledge gained from general education, health science and clinical laboratory science so students are able to exercise good judgment, ethics and appropriate decision making abilities to serve the needs of the community and the health profession,” she said.

She also added that the younger generation should take the opportunity to excel in this profession as it enables them to climb up the corporate ladder.

As a requirement in the programme, students will undergo a 28-week Medical Laboratory Placement in Year 2 and Year 3 at either a general or private hospital.

The placement opportunity provides them with hands-on training in the main components of Biochemistry, Hematology, Blood Transfusion, Serology, Histopathology, Cytology, Microbiology and Parasitology.

“Holders of qualifications relating to MLT need not worry of a shortage of job opportunities, whether they are seeking positions locally or overseas in the public or private sectors as there will be ample employers seeking out their expertise,” said Angela. Graduates planning for overseas migration will also find that this qualification will put them on the priority list as this profession is listed among the critically needed professionals in many developed nations.

SEGi will be holding a series of Open Days over two consecutive weekends on Mar 19 – 20 and Mar 25 – 27 with exciting offers for both visitors and new registrations for the April intake.
