EXCEPTIONAL RESULTS: Fatimah (third left), presents the Meradong District Best SPM award to Gaudelia Vyner as others look on.

SARIKEI: Gaudelia Vyner of SMK Kai Chung, Bintangor emerged as the top achiever in the 2010 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examnination, the result of which was released yesterday.

With nine grade A+ and two grade A passes (9A+, 2As) she was also named the best 2010 SPM achiever for Sarikei division, beating the top achievers from Sarikei and Julau/Pakan districts.

Sarikei district’s top 2010 SPM achiever is Lau Wen Jie of SMK Tinggi Sarikei who scored 8A+, 2A
while Julau/Pakan district’s best is Lim Ka Ping of SMK Julau (5A+, 1A, 2A-, 2B+).

The three received the respective district’s Best 2010 SPM Awards from Minister in the Chief Minister’s Office, Datin Fatimah Abdullah in conjunction with Special Job Training and Counselling Day (HPLP) for students and SPM/SPMV/STPM/STAM school leavers held at the Central Market here which she officiated at yesterday.

On the performance of local students in public examinations such as Ujian Penilaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR), Penilaian Menengah Rendah (PMR), SPM and Sijil Persekolah Tinggi Malaysia (STPM), Fatimah said she was pleased to note that Sarikei had consistently emerged among the top three best performing divisions in the state.

She attributed the encouraging outcome to the high discipline of the students, commitment of the teachers, support and co-operation accorded by the parents and the surrounding community at large.

A combination of these factors had provided a conducive environment for teaching and learning activities and believing that the positive elements were always alive, Fatimah expressed confidence that the division had maintained their performance in all of last year’s public examinations including SPM.

Therefore, she felt that holding the historical HPLP in conjunction with the announcement of SPM result here yesterday was more of an honour accorded to the division for its consistent fine performance rather than a mere coincidence, Fatimah said.

“We had previously held HPLP in other districts, division and National Service Training Centre in the state, but today’s event is very special and historical. All the SPM students from 10 secondary schools in the division converge here to get their SPM result slips and at the same time are offered the opportunity to apply for admission into various institutions of higher learning, colleges and skill training centres.”

A total of 40 such institutions opened their respective counters in conjunction with the event organised by the MPSMLSS, Chief Minister’s Department yesterday.

Among those present were Divisional Education officer, Kassim Arbain and heads of various government departments.
