Car salesman to hang for drug trafficking

GEORGE TOWN: The Penang High Court yesterday sentenced a former car salesman to death after finding him guilty of trafficking 18,889 grammes of ganja worth RM44,000, three years ago.

Judicial Commissioner Nurmala Salim meted out the sentence on Aidilfitri Idrus, 41, after ruling that the accused had failed to raise reasonable doubt over the prosecution’s case.

Aidilfitri was charged of the offence at Lebuh Tunku Kudin 1, here at about 2.40pm, on April 30, 2008.

Nurmala said the court does not believe the reason given by the accused that he did not know the contents of a bag that he was carrying, after having received it from a man known as Azhar.

It defies logic that the accused did not inspect what was inside the bag which was not locked, because the 20 slabs of ganja, would have a reasonable weight and smell.

Aidilfitri meanwhile, remained calm when the sentence was meted out except for occasionally glancing at his family members seated at the public gallery. — Bernama
