KUCHING: I’m very impressed by the students’ enthusiasm and their creativity! Hopefully, this programme will help develop a group of young people with passion, ambition and creativity that will be very useful to them in the future and for Malaysia. – Datuk Rashid Khan, STB chief executive officer

Two design students from Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Samarahan won the top prizes for the Borneo Jazz Festival (BJF) and Rainforest World Music Festival (RWMF) Official T-shirt Design Competition.

Their designs garnered the most public votes during the competition held at the Kuching Waterfront Godown Amphitheatre recently.

The winning entry for BJF came from Nurfatin Nadiah Tukiran, 19, while Khairul Nizam Rusli, 20, took the honours for RWMF.

In second and third place for BJF were Afiezul Sailan and Mohd Nor Syaddiq Mohammad Hamsah, while Mohammad Aizzat Mohd Abd Hafiz and Abang Nasiruddin Abang Mohd Khalid were second and third for RWMF.

In total, 45 UiTM Samarahan students submitted entries.

This year’s competition also marked the first time the public were invited to vote for the winning design.

Voting was done during the event as well as online.

Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) chief executive officer Datuk Rashid Khan said the T-shirt design competition was an opportunity for bright, creative minds to share their vision and inspiration to convey Sarawak’s rich cultural identity to a worldwide audience at the two festivals.

“STB is proud to be associated with such esteemed institutions such as UiTM as we continue to present great events to entertain and enthral Malaysians and visitors from around the world.

“I’m very impressed by the students’ enthusiasm and their creativity! Hopefully, this programme will help develop a group of young people with passion, ambition and creativity that will be very useful to them in the future and for Malaysia,” he said during the prize presentation.

This initiative is also part of STB’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme in reaching out to students to assist in events organised by STB.

Taylor’s University in Kuala Lumpur is also collaborating with STB to champion youth development.

Taylor’s students will help to promote the festivals, assist with ticket sales and also help out at the festivals while picking up invaluable learning in real-world scenarios at these world-class events.

Taylor’s University will also hold a preview at its lakeside campus on May 10-11.

At this preview, two groups — Les Doigts De L’Homme and Yuichiro Tokuda’s RALYZZ DIG — that will be featured at the BJF will perform.
