KUCHING: Arena Sukan is offering Wing Chun, a type of Chinese kung fu, to martial arts enthusiasts.
The class which will commence on June 2 is a joint effort between My Martial Arts (MYMA) Training Centre Kuching and Arena Sukan.
It will be held every Thursdays from 7.30pm to 9pm in Arena Sukan Sports Complex at Jalan Wan Alwi here.
MYMA senior student Dean Kuan yesterday said Wing Chun is not an aggressive type of Chinese martial arts.
“Wing Chun is more like women’s kung fu. It is not to use force against force. It is indeed a very good self-defence martial art,” he explained.
He pointed out that participation in Chinese martial arts would not only create a healthy lifestyle but boost one’s self-confidence.
“Come for the first class. I can guarantee you that after the first class, you will be able to defend yourself against people who are bigger and stronger than you,” Kuan assured.
Wing Chun was founded by a Buddhist nun, Ng Mui, of the famous Shaolin Monastery, over 400 years ago.
Ng felt that other styles of kung fu were far too strenuous so came out with a system of body dynamics and techniques that required minimal movement and energy.
The kung fu was named after a young female student of Ng, Yim Wing Chun.
Wing Chun is based on intrinsic energy, stresses on ‘centre-line punching’ and utilising the fact that ‘the shortest distance between two points is a straight line’.
The most important part of Wing Chun is that after students are given the basic principles, they must build their own unique style, incorporating what is within their own capabilities and disregarding what is awkward or inefficient.
The fee of the Wing Chun training course is RM50 per month while registration fee is RM10.
Registration fee will be waived for those who register in May besides a RM10 early bird discount for the first month.
