MIRI: Curtin Sarawak launched a tree planting ceremony yesterday in collaboration with Borneo Jazz 2011, in their bid to preserve mother nature.

The ceremony was launched by personnel from Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) headed by its chief executive officer Datuk Rashid Khan and staff of Curtin Sarawak.

The ceremony was part of the activity for Borneo Jazz 2011 which started here yesterday.

This year Borneo Jazz 2011 is given the theme ‘Environment’ and participants as well as vendors at the festival would be using environmentally friendly materials for food and drinks.

A total of 100 Meranti seedlings were planted during the ceremony. Curtin Sarawak deputy pro vice chancellor Professor Alistair Inglis was among those present.

“This is one of our efforts to help and promote the importance of preserving our natural resources, especially in Sarawak where people are always concerned about greening their environment,” said Rashid in his officiating address.

He also praised Curtin University for coming forward and collaborating with STB in the effort and hoped more will do their bit to help mother nature in the same manner.

The trees were planted at an open area behind the university’s Function and Recreational Centre and members of the local and foreign media also participated in the event.
