Police thwart drug smuggling attempt at airport

JOHOR BAHARU: Three Bulgarian nationals were arrested at the Sultan Ismail International Airport here two days ago for attempting to smuggle in 5.6kg of syabu.

The drug, worth RM1.5 million, was found in hidden compartments of two bags belonging to two of the suspects, Johor police chief DCP Datuk Mohd Mokhtar Mohd Shariff told a media conference yesterday.

He said the suspects, aged 25, 26 and 36, were in remand until May 25 for investigation under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

One of the suspects, he said, had entered the country four times and was believed to be a drug mule.

Last April 27, two Iranian men were detained for attempting to smuggle in 4.555kg drug at the same airport.

The bags that were seized in both the case were of the same brand and believed to have been specially made as the drug could not be sniffed by the K9 dogs.

In another case, Mohd Mokhtar said police detained a 50-year-old man in Sungai Mati two days ago and seized from him a bag containing a pistol and two magazines with 22 live bullets.

Also seized from the man, who has five previous records, were three samurai swords, a handcuff, several types of drugs and a bag containing a toy pistol.

The man, who tested positive for drug, is detained for investigation under Section 8 of the Firearms (Increased Penalties) Act 1971 and Section 8(A) and Section 36(1) of the Firearms Act 1960. — Bernama
