Sabah’s Assistant Minister of Finance Datuk Tawfiq Abu Bakar Titingan said the heads of the families were given the option if they were interested.
“Applicants who are qualify will be given priority,” he said after handing out food products contributed by the Tawau Umno and MCA Divisions, to the fire victims at the Baitul Rahman Mosque here yesterday.
“We hope the assistance would help ease their burden as the families could not salvage their belongings during the fire,” he said.
The fire on May 25 destroyed 10 double storey houses at Kampung Baru, Jalan Bunga Raya leaving about 200 of their occupants with only the clothes on their backs.
Tawau Municipal Council president, Ismail Mayakub, said the council had opened a counter for registration of victims affected in the fire to facilitate distribution of aid. Those who had no relatives to go to were given temporary shelter at the Baitul Rahman Mosque. — Bernama
