CCTV effective in bringing down crime rate — Chor



IPOH: The installation of CCTV at ‘hotspots’ located in 25 local councils throughout the country has helped reduce crime rate by 30 per cent said Housing and Local Councils Minister Datuk Chor Chee Heung.

He said the installation of CCTV under the safe city programme since early last year, had shown effective results in reducing crime rate, he said.

“We will continue to monitor its effectiveness before expanding the programme to more locations,” he told reporters after visiting the location of CCTV at the Ipoh City Council here yesterday.

He said the installation of 496 CCTV at the 25 local councils would be completed by Aug 31.

“All the CCTVs installed will be linked to the district and state police headquarters,” he said.

Chor said GTC Global Sdn Bhd was awarded the contract to install the CCTV, worth RM59.8 million, over a five-year period.

In Perak, 40 CCTV were installed, 24 in Ipoh and 16 in Manjung. — Bernama
