KUCHING: Shopping mall security guards caught two men moments after they stole crash helmets at a nearby parking bay on Friday.

The incident happened around 9.45pm when a 16-year-old boy and his girlfriend went to pick up their motorcycle at the Jalan Simpang Tiga mall.

They saw two men cutting the straps of their helmets so they alerted several nearby security guards, who immediately went into action. The thieves  fled on foot with the helmets but were quickly apprehended by the guards.

The suspects, in their late 20s, appeared intoxicated and denied any wrong doing as they were handed over to the police. Their motorcycle was impounded and brought to the police station for investigation.

In an unrelated incident on Friday, a cafeteria worker at a private golf club lost RM600 when her purse was snatched.

The 40-something woman told reporters that on her way home (to Siol Kandis), she stopped at a shop nearby to buy a prepaid coupon for her handphone.

As she was about to enter the shop, her handphone rang so she tucked her purse under her right arm to answer it. That was when an unidentified man walked up from behind and grabbed her purse before fleeing to an accomplice waiting on a nearby motorcycle. The victim said the money inside her purse was her salary which she had received earlier in the day.

Meanwhile a salesgirl riding home from work on Friday lost cash and handphone kept in her purse, which was snatched by a motorcyclist.

The salesgirl, in her 20s, was riding a motorcycle from her workplace at a shopping mall at Jalan Simpang Tiga to her house in Taman Hussein, Petra Jaya when the incident happened around 10.30pm. A bike appeared and its rider rode abreast with her before he reached over to grab her purse from her motorcycle’s basket.

The victim could only stare helplessly as the man made a U-turn and sped off in the opposite direction with her purse, which contained RM400 and a handphone.

Police are investigating after the victim lodged a police report.
