KUCHING: Engage in lifelong learning to ensure that you are updated with the latest knowledge, skill and competencies in your field.

Guest speaker Dato Sri Empiang Jabu said this when delivering the occasional address at Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak campus’s graduation and award presentation ceremony yesterday.

“Make a decision that you are going to make a difference in the world, even if it is in one small corner of it. Work hard but get your priorities right,” she told the 292 graduates attending the ceremony at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK).

Empiang, who is on the university council board of directors, reminded them to contribute to the development of the district, state and country.

Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud, who is Swinburne Pro Chancellor, was there to present the scrolls to graduates in engineering, science, business, ICT and multimedia. Several awards were also presented to top students and graduates.

The Yayasan Sarawak Anugerah Graduan Cemerlang Sarawak went to mechanical engineering graduate Rata Shalom Pyng-Eing Muda.

Wendy Chan Wang Ping took the Year One Ernst and Young Best Accounting Graduate Awards, while Luna Chin Su Kim and Evelyn Gan received Year Two and Year Three awards, respectively.

The CPA Australia Book Prize for Third Year Financial Accounting in 2010 went to Kong Keh Jiun and Angela Lee Sik Fai. Lee also took the KPMG Tax Services Sdn Bhd Prize for Academic Excellence in Taxation 2010.

Meanwhile, Choo Chung Siung was given the Cahya Mata Sarawak Award for Best Engineering while Sim Kwang Young took the award for Best Engineering Graduate in Mechanical Engineering.

The Sarawak Information System Sdn Bhd (SAINS) Awards went to Yee Yin Kit for Information Technology Best Graduate Award in Computer Science and Software Engineering, and to Tiong Sie Liik or Electronic and Computer Systems.

Kelvin Awe received the Sarawak Energy Berhad Award for Best Engineering Graduate in Electrical and Electronic Engineering.

Those present included Swinburne Sarawak Council chairman Tan Sri Datuk Amar Adenan Satem, Swinburne Sarawak Sdn Bhd chairman Datuk Amar Mohamad Morshidi Abdul Ghani, Swinburne University of Technology Vice Chancellor and President Professor Ian Young and Swinburne Sarawak Pro Vice Chancellor and Chief Executive Professor Helmut Lueckenhausen.
