KUCHING: Students who got pregnant out of wedlock should be allowed to return to school after giving birth.

Minister in Chief Minister’s Department Datin Fatimah Abdullah said an education would ensure they have a better future.

“Having asked Education Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s opinion on this, it is important for me to stress that the students be allowed to return to school,” she said.

Speaking at a programme organised by the Parent-Teacher Association (PIBG) of SMK Demak Laut yesterday, she expressed her hope that schools would give these girls a chance to resume their studies.

Fatimah said it would be a difficult decision for an individual to make, especially when some of the students might have been rape victims who never saw this happening to them.

If they should decide to return to school, it should be fully supported by the community because they have a right to education.

“Let go of what had happened.

“We must give the girls a chance to start over,” Fatimah said.

She also called upon parents to communicate more with their children.

Also present was Samariang assemblywoman Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali.
