KUCHING: A workshop to explore the world of graphic novels will be held at the Limkokwing Borneo campus on Jan 15.

A press release here said graphic novels are fast becoming the latest craze in the world of art and design, with their vibrant images and creative use of digital graphic art.

The vast development of this relatively new spectrum can be credited to the new age of artists who have evolved conventional methods and ideas of art and created their own innovative brands of design. Fans of the popular American series ‘Heroes’ will recognise the vivid graphic novel drawings featured throughout the drama and its role in telling the story to the audience.

It was these drawings that increased the graphic appeal of ‘Heroes’ and many hopeful artists were inspired by the works of the creative team behind these graphic novels.

Steven Lejeune, one of the talents who created the dramatic art pieces, will once again collaborate with Limkokwing Borneo to bring this form of artwork to aspiring artists through the workshop.

“The creation of graphic novels is a relatively new area of art, and it was something that I decided to dedicate my life to after I participated in a workshop held by a famous French cartoonist in France.

“While many youths today are familiar with graphic novels or manga, very few know about the actual work that goes into the production of these novels.

“Through this workshop, I hope to introduce the participants to the behind-the-scenes work of creating a graphic novel, and be able to reach out to the aspiring young artists to delve further into developing more works of art of this genre,” said Lejeune.

Lejeune, who organised a similar workshop with Limkokwing Borneo last year, said he would focus more on creating storyboards also known as the mise en scene aspect of producing graphic novels.

Participants will be introduced to scriptwriting as well as the visual composition of a storyboard, and will learn how to arrange the various scenes into a storyboard before finally fitting it into a completed set up.

This collaboration between Lejeune and Limkokwing Borneo will not only benefit current Limkokwing students, but also reach others interested in the creative arts but are unsure how to realise their ambitions.

Students undergoing the Diploma in Graphic Design will be exposed to modules such as Illustration, Creative Studies, and Multimedia, which will perfect their drawing and creative skills as they proceed with the diploma programme.

They will also be required to create a brand of their own and conceptualise their ideas on storyboards as well as come up with a plan to market and sell their final product.

Participants of the workshop can anticipate a three-hour session with Lejeune, whereby he will introduce them to the fundamentals of illustration such as sketching, creating caricatures as well as other techniques using pencils and technical pens.

He will also share his artwork with participants and explain in depth what is required of a graphic novelist and the marketability of the profession.
