KOTA KINABALU: The federal government has allocated RM2 million to the Kota Kinabalu City Hall for the implementation of the Safe City Programme.

FOR SAFER FUTURE: Iliyas signing a plaque to mark the launching of the Safe City programme.

Mayor Datuk Iliyas Ibrahim said the two immediate plans that have been proposed this year are putting up safety barriers along the pedestrian walkway from Bandaran Berjaya roundabout to Karamunsing and installing more street lights in Segama and Kampung Air.

“City Hall will discuss with the city police to identify the ‘hot spots’ before implementing any project and to ensure the program will succeed.

“We hope the residents of the city will work with us and the police towards making the city a safe place to stay,” Iliyas said at the launching of the program at the City Hall ground yesterday.

According to the mayor, three strategies have been formulated to implement the Safe City programme.

The first strategy is environmental design initiatives for the separation of pedestrian walkways from motorised lanes, the implementation of crime prevention through environmental design and the establishment of GIS mapping for crime and safe city program.

The second strategy is target hardening by providing police posts, safety mirrors, crime prevention signages, safety alarms or panic buttons, the provision of motorcycle parking areas with locking facilities, the installation of CCTV in commercial premises and public places and generating appropriate activities considered as vulnerable crime spots.

The third strategy involves management, community involvement and public awareness.

“The City Hall will hold public awareness programmes and also publicity, to improve surveillance in housing areas and deliberating the agenda on safe city programmes at full council meetings.
