TYT, CM among 600 at inaugural Unimas Chancellor Concert

KUCHING: Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) held its inaugural Chancellor Concert at the new State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Complex on Sunday attended by Head of State Tun Datuk Patinggi Abang Muhammad Salahuddin and Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud and 600 guests.

The event was held to honour Salahuddin who is also Unimas Chancellor for his leadership and contribution to the university’s development all this years. Unimas cultural body (Bayu) and Faculty of Creative and Applied Arts (FSGK) provided the orchestral performance for the evening, entertaining guests with songs from various music genre which included classical, experimental, contemporary, traditional, ‘keroncong’ and modern pop.

Students and lecturers from its music programme were involved in the success of the concert.

Also present to lighten up the celebration included Sarawak’s very own Bob of ‘Akademi Fantasia’ fame and famous celebrity Datuk Mahadzir Lokman who was the master of ceremony.

Taib who is also Unimas Prochancellor and wife Puan Sri Ragad Waleed Alkurdi arrived at 8.20pm followed by the Head of State and wife Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Norkiah at 8.30pm. Both gentlemen were seen handsomely clad in their black tuxedo with a black bow-tie for Salahuddin, while the Chief Minister opted for red.

Unimas vice chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Khairuddin Ab Hamid and wife were the first to arrive at 8pm followed by its board of directors chairman Datu Dr Hatta Solhi and wife about 10 minutes later.

“Chancellor Concert event, which also acts as a charity dinner would see proceeds from the sales of tables channelled to a few selected charitable bodies including to Unimas staff and students charity fund.

“Tickets for the charitable concert were sold per table based ranging from RM7,000 for the Gold category, RM5,000 (Silver), RM3,000 (Bronze) and RM2,000 for the Blue category,” stated a press liaison officer to the media during the concert.

During the night, guests were served with fusion concept delicacy prepared by a well known hotel here. The two-hour concert began at 7.30pm.

Guests were in full support of the evening’s ‘black tie event’ theme where all were seen in suits and tuxedos for the men, and beautiful evening gowns and ‘baju kurungs’ among the women.

Also present was former Unimas board of directors chairman Tan Sri Datuk Amar Bujang Nor.
