BAU: Around 3,000 to 4,000 land titles will be issued to Native Customary Rights (NCR) landowners from five villages in Tasik Biru constituency this year.

This follows the completion of NCR land perimeter survey work in the villages of Sibuluh, Grogo, Stass, Serikin and Skibang.

Assistant Minister of Environment Datuk Peter Nansian Ngusie said the titles would be handed over to the landowners very soon.

“We will check with the calendar of the minister to issue the titles,” he told reporters yesterday after opening the Tasik Biru-level Youth Carnival at Redeems Centre, Jalan Apar-Segong, near here.

On a related matter, Nansian, who is also Tasik Biru assemblyman, said the statewide NCR land perimeter survey, which began last year, had resolved many issues pertaining to land.

“At the same time, we will try to explain to the people on NCR land. Their land is still theirs, we are not taking it away,” he said.

However, he said, if their land was needed for the purpose of implementing development projects, the government would compensate them.

The perimeter survey of NCR land is funded by the federal government.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak gave an allocation of RM20 million last year for the new NCR land initiative and an extra allocation of RM60 million this year.

Meanwhile, in his speech earlier, Nansian said the government had not taken away any land in Bau.

He said such claims were only made by certain people who were out to defame the government and him.

Also present yesterday were political secretary to the Ministry of Works Datuk As’ari Ibrahim and Bau District Officer Tom Hem Mijod.

The two-day carnival, comprising games and activities for youths, also featured performances by popular recording artistes.
