Malaysia, the defending champions, is co-hosting the 2012 Suzuki Cup regional tournament with Thailand.

Humennyi, who met officials of the Football Association of Malaysia last week, said there was potential in promoting the Suzuki Cup to Ukranian football fans and ‘we can help’.

“We know that there are many enthusiastic football fans out there in Ukraine who may want to see something on this side of the world,” the envoy said.

Humennyi, who had been the ambassador to Thailand, said this could also be facilitated by the direct air links between Ukraine and Thailand. Currently, there are many daily flights between Malaysia and Thailand.

Ukraine, currently ranked 34th on FIFA’s list, did not make the cut to the 2010 World Cup in South Africa when it lost narrowly at 0-1 to Greece in the final group play-off. — Bernama
