Careers in agriculture sector rewarding – students

KOTA KINABALU: A career in the agriculture sector is a source of pride and should no longer be thought of as menial labour.

The excellent achiever at the Institut Pertanian Sabah (IPS) 39th Convocation Ceremony yesterday, Iwansah Mohd Jansah, 23, as well as excellent academic achiever Roger Song Jou Kim, 21, and graduate Nurnani Geoffrey, 22, opined that agriculture is an important sector as this is the people’s source of food.
Roger, when interviewed said that it was wrong for the people to look down on those who are keen on venturing into the sector.
“You have to remember that the agriculture sector is the one that brings food to the table,” he said.

Rober added that he would like to continue his education in the field of agriculture and he had already been accepted for study at the Universiti Putra Malaysia, Bintulu campus.

“I will be undergoing for my Diploma in Agriculture there,” he said.

Presently, he is employed as a plantation supervisor at Sawit Kinabalu, and said that he wanted to garner as much experience as possible from his current job.

Iwansah, who hails from Tawau, said that the agriculture sector posed a lot of advantages.

“Well, for one, there is never any shortage of work opportunities,” he said.

Iwansah said that he hoped to become an entrepreneur in the sector one day.

He will also be going for his diploma in the near future.

Nurnani, who hails from Ranau, felt that the agriculture sector has developed so much over the years and that women should no longer be scared of venturing into it.

“There is not so much hard labour involved. As a woman, I have been taught how to handle a tractor, how to do agricultural related labor and I don’t find it so difficult,” she said.
