KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian National Archives will extend its training of archived material management to the public beginning next year, said its director Dr Samsiah Muhamad.

The training is meant to educate the public especially the young to appreciate the significance of archived material like audiovisual analogue which is now rarely or no longer used at all.

“Presently the training is for archives officers and those in other government departments who have expressed their keenness in becoming ‘experts’ in the field.

“For the public and the interested young, we will implement next year,” she told reporters after the launch of the 15th South East Asian and Pacific Archives Audiovisual Association Conference yesterday.

She said the training would also involve inter-cooperation among agencies under the Ministry of Information, Communication and Culture such as the Malaysian National Film Development Board (Finas) and Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM), and the Higher Education

Ministry if there is a request from the universities.

Meanwhile Information Communication and Culture Deputy Minister Datuk Maglin Dennis D’Cruz considered the conference as the best platform for young people to recognise audiovisual material  they had never seen before.

“Some of them do not even know the shape of a cassette player, or the role of RTM or the Information Department as important sources of information in the early days.— Bernama
