class="wp-caption-text">GAWAI FAVOURITE: Live old hens are used to prepare the popular dish ‘manok pansuh’ for Gawai.

SIBU: The Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism (MDTCC) yesterday warned traders against hiking the price of live old hens.

Its Sibu branch chief Balraj Singh said this item was gazetted among 10 essential items under the seven-day ‘Gawai 2013’ Price Control Scheme, starting May 27.

Live old hens, locally known as ‘ayam tua hidup’, are used to prepare the popular local delicacy —‘manok pansuh’ — which is a must for the Gawai Dayak celebration.

The scheme is applicable not only in Sibu but also Mukah, Dalat, Kanowit and Selangau.

“Errant traders could be charged in court for infringing the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011. Upon conviction, they could be fined up to RM100,000 or sentenced up to three years in jail.

“For subsequent offence, they can be fined up to RM200,000 or jailed for five years. As for companies, they can be fined up to RM250,000,” Balraj said.

He reminded traders to display pink price tags for the 10 gazetted items to enable consumers to differentiate them from others throughout the duration of the scheme.

Unscrupulous vendors placing water on the pans of their weighing scales to add to the weight of the food items could be slapped with a hefty fine, he warned.

He said the Weigh and Measure Act 1972 could be invoked against offenders.

The ministry has also intensified checks on outlets offering cheap sale.

Balraj cautioned: “Holding cheap sale without approval from the ministry is a serious offence as such action is tantamount to misleading consumers.

“This is an outright contravention of the Trade Descriptions (Cheap Sales Price) (Amendment) Act 2011. Upon conviction, offenders could be fined up to RM100,000 or sentenced up to three years in jail, or both.”

Balraj advised consumers to be prudent in their spending, particularly when using credit cards as they may be tempted to purchase more than needed.

“Be smart consumers and learn to compare prices to get the best deals,” he said.

Retail prices for the 10 items under the scheme are live chicken at RM6.70/kg, standard chicken complete with head, feet, liver and gizzard (RM8.50/kg), super chicken without head, feet, liver and gizzard (RM9.50/kg), old live hen (RM6.80/kg), Grade A eggs (RM0.36 each), Grade B eggs (RM0.35 each), Grade C eggs (RM0.34 each), imported beef (RM24/kg), pig’s belly (RM18/kg) and lean and fat pork (RM17/kg).

The public are urged to call 084-329202 or 335622 if they notice any hike in price of essential items or unhealthy business practices.

Armed man arrested near court house

Local
<guid

A lot of follow-ups have to be done and I hope you (the ministers, department and agencies involved) will rise to the occasion.”

Taib hoped the relevant department and agencies would also learn from the experiences of foreign participants from Indonesia and Australia on how they had adapted the old concept into a new role that inculcated growth of social development.

Meanwhile, participants came from 21 museums throughout Malaysia and also two museums from Indonesia and a museum from Australia. Programmes comprised a seminar, talks and sports carnival while the closing will be this Sunday.

This year also marks the second time Sarawak Museum has played host to this national-level celebration after the first time in 2003.

Also present at the event yesterday were Mawan, Tourism Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg, National Museums director general Datuk Ibrahim Ismail and state Museum Department director Ipoi Datan.

CM: Harwood Timber an exemplary timber organisation

Local
<guid

Alan Ling [...]

THE government has been urged to consider abolishing the toll for the Asean Bridge in Miri.

Alan Ling (DAP-Piasau) said the Asean Bridge over Baram River provides the direct land access to neighbouring Brunei, and serves as the only land link to Limbang and Lawas towns in the northern part of the state.

He pointed out that the one-way toll rate of RM10 was too expensive considering the short distance of the bridge and that had deterred frequent travellers from making trips to Miri.

In this respect, Ling had suggested that the government should consider abolishing the tolls, apart from upgrading the facilities near the borders to boost tourism and commuter flow of more visitors from neighbouring Brunei and Sabah by land.

He stated this when debating on the TYT Speech at the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting yesterday.

On another tourism issue, Ling informed the August House that most Mirians wished for Piasau Camp to be preserved as a green lung and to turn it into a permanent nature park or camp called ‘Hornbill Park’.

“The urgency to get the camp gazetted as a Hornbill Park is because the forest is home to a family of Oriental Pied Hornbills,” he suggested.

According to him, the local residents were all against building development projects there, as that will destroy the unique natural environment and habitat of the hornbills.

“Miri and Piasau Camp came about as part and parcel of the oil and gas industry that can be traced back 100 years ago. Thus, preserving Piasau Camp will also add another unique eco-tourism product top Miri as a resort city right at its doorstep,” he noted.

In his speech, Ling also highlighted the alleged negligence on the part of the Miri Hospital which he claimed had caused a miscarriage when the operation for childbirth was delayed by a day and the parents were told that the mother’s foetus had died two days before the operation.

“The parents were however refused the documents on the foetal echo-cardiogram the day before to prove that the foetus was alive and this situation is a mockery to the professionalism of our hospitals,” he said.

He also cited that prior to the case, he encountered a case where a young man had went into coma and almost died because a doctor in Marudi Hospital injected the wrong side of his lung.

“For that he was offered a compensation of a mere RM3,600 only, which is clearly an insult to the risks taken by the victim, the trauma that he went through, which nearly caused him his life.

“I believe that these two cases are enough to set alarm bells ringing on the quality of medical services our hospital are offering to the people,” he said.

In this respect, Ling suggested that the quality of medical services provided in Miri and throughout the state be seriously looked into.

Mawan not saying anything yet on PRS-SPDP merger

Local
<guid

Until and unless we do this, we will continually be sidelined by future leaders of Malaysia. This is the only way to strengthen Dayak unity, and also to restore its dignity,” said Masing, obviously disappointed with the appointment of one full minister and one deputy minister from the party even though PRS delivered six seats for Barisan Nasional in the just-concluded 13th general election.

The merger was first mooted in 2005 by Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud who wanted the two parties to merge into one political entity. SPDP is a breakaway party from now defunct Sarawak National Party (SNAP), formed in 2002, while PRS was formed following the deregistration of Parti Bansa Dayak Sarawak (PBDS) in October 2004.

Discussions between the two parties on the issue suddenly died down during the 2008 general election. However, the discussion resumed before the April 2011 state election but nothing moved after that even though both sides have their respective merger negotiation committees.

On another matter, Mawan still firmly believed the prime minister was saving the best for the last in federal cabinet appointments for SPDP.

He was of the opinion that the cabinet announced by Najib on May 15 was not the final line-up as there would be subsequent announcements to be made soon and more ministerial posts would be created.

“Maybe (it will be) after UMNO convention in September. The cabinet will be more inclusive, taking into consideration all political needs and the new thrust of our government. The relevant ministries will then have to be created to spearhead that programme. I believe so.

“That’s why we (SPDP) are not rushing, except that the backlash is there and it was expected. Some say I am very cool (over the matter). I am not trying to be cool, I just want to make sense before I just get angry. You can’t get angry with your boss,” he said.

He also mentioned that he had always been in contact with the prime minister, and disclosed that Najib even agreed to visit his longhouse again this time on June 9 for a Gawai programme.

“I will be meeting him soon. I have the confirmation that I will be seeing him (in Putrajaya), definitely before Gawai,” he said.

Asked on fellow state BN component Sarawak United People’s Party which was given a full minister post despite winning just one parliamentary seat, Mawan said disappointments from SPDP members were expected but they had to accept the decision.

“We should not look at things that way – ‘they got this, but we don’t’. Maybe the appointment (given to SUPP deputy president and six-term Serian MP Datuk Richard Riot) was due to political merit that PM has to consider, and I believe it was fair,” he said.

He also vowed that once SPDP is represented in the cabinet, its ministers or deputy ministers would serve for all Malaysians and not just for a particular race or region. Asked how many posts SPDP was aiming for, he jokingly said “as many as possible” although the least expected would be the previous quota of two deputy ministers.

SPDP won all its four seats – Mas Gading, Saratok, Bintulu and Baram – in the recently concluded 13th general election. The victors included two new faces – Anthony Nogeh in Mas Gading and Anyi Ngau in Baram.

Mawan, who is also a senior minister in the state cabinet and Pakan assemblyman, was the other new face when he won in Saratok while Bintulu was successfully retained by deputy president Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing.
