We have to emphasise primary health care and early prevention of diseases which could reduce health costs.”

He said this at a news conference after attending a farewell reception for him hosted by the Human Resources Ministry, here, yesterday.

Dr Subramaniam said a number of diseases like diabetes could be controlled at the early stage by practising a healthy lifestyle, but the failure to do so would not only adversely affect health but would also incur a high treatment expenditure.

On his experience of helming the Human Resources Ministry previously, he said some new elements were introduced like the minimum monthly pay of RM900 and raising the retirement age to 60 for private sector employees (effective July 1, 2013), and free medical examination for Socso (Social Security Organisation) members aged 40 and above, which were all well received by the public.

He said 1.9 million private sector workers would benefit from the free health screening, implemented since January 2013.

Dr Subramaniam also reminded that the combination of three parties — workers, employers and government — in continuing to take the best approach in resolving arising problems would contribute to the nation’s wellbeing. — Bernama
