Off with their…?

THE Republic of Poland recently decided that they had enough of paedophiles (seems that they have quite a number of paedophilia cases there) and pass a law making castration mandatory for these child sex offenders.

Of course in this day and age, castration does not necessarily involves knives and mutilation. Science has found ways of ‘cutting it’ (cutting sex drive lah! What did you think?) using chemicals, aptly called chemical castration.

This means administering drugs that deflates the sex drive of a person. Let’s look at chemical castration this way — its effects are the total opposite of what Viagra would do to a person.

Anyway, back to Poland and its law to chemically castrate child sex offenders. The law states that paedophiles convicted of raping children under the age of 15 years or a close relative would have to undergo chemical therapy on their release from prison. The Polish government states that paedophiles are degenerates — sick creatures and the law is meant to improve their mental health, lower libido and reduce risk of another crime being committed.

The Eye agrees that paedophiles are sick degenerates, but isn’t so sure that chemical castration may improve the ‘mental health’ of such degenerates. If anything, it’ll make them even sicker in their heads than they already are. Plus, they will be dependant on drugs to lower their libido and keep out of trouble, so to speak, that the pressure becomes intense. A drug dependant (even of the drug is prescribed) degenerate with lots of pressure on him is a walking time bomb and is more of a menace to society.

We often think, “yeah… cut his balls off and make him suffer” when we hear of rapists and paedophiles. We want them to suffer, and through our emotional desire to see justice served, we would of course support the harshest of punishments for such offenders, without weighing out the possible effects or outcomes.

Research on such drugs have shown that there have been effects such as increase in body fat, reduced bone density, besides ‘feminising’ effects like loss of body hair and muscle mass.

However, more apparent is that these libido lowering effects are only temporary, and the sex offender will have to undergo intensive psychological therapy. Doesn’t sound too promising does it? Tick-tick-tick. Walking time bomb.

Someone asked the Eye if a similar law should be implemented to punish paedophiles in Malaysia. The Eye instead had this to ask in response to that question is, “Do we have the psychological and psychiatric expertise to deal with these walking time bombs if they are chemically castrated? Has psychiatric care here reached that level?” Eye never got a definite ‘yes’ for an answer. Tick-tick-tick.

Alan Turing, a known computer scientist way back in the 1950s opted for chemical castration to avoid imprisonment when he was found to be homosexual (it was illegal to be gay then). Aside from some physical side effects, the guy eventually broke down mentally too and killed himself.

So should paedophiles be castrated in this country? Eye think not. The thought of letting chemically induced sick, degenerate child sex abusers back into society is scary. Eye would rather see them hang, really. Or at least, kept locked up, far, far away for a long, long time.
