NEW DELHI: A Malaysian family’s year-end holiday trip to India ended on a bitter note after two passports belonging to the family members were stolen at a famous historical site in Delhi Sunday. The family was visiting the Qutub Minar, the world’s tallest brick minaret, in south Delhi, when some people stole their pouch from their bag, which contained some cash and two passports.

“We lost some Singaporean currency, two passports and our Mykad. Four guys came from behind and just flicked the pouch from my son’s bag (knapsack), which he was carrying on his back.

“I was so close to them but could not do anything as it happened quite fast,” Tham Kuan Tha, who lost her passport along with another friend, Yee Than Rou, told Bernama.

Her husband Lee C F, from Johor Baharu, said the family arrived in Chennai on Dec 13 and had been visiting several major Indian cities before they reached Delhi, to visit some tourist attractions prior to their departure to Malaysia on Thursday.

“We visited several countries like Vietnam and Thailand in the past but this is the first time such an incident happened to us.

“Luckily my son’s and my passports were with us. We need to go back home soon because I have to report to work next week,” said Lee, who is in the teaching profession.

The family is now stranded in the city and the Malaysian High Commission is helping them to obtain the exit certificate so that they could leave India soon. — Bernama
