KUCHING: The body of a middle-aged woman was discovered on the roof of the main entrance of a service apartment here yesterday in what was believed to be a suicide incident.

The victim has been identified as Wong Ngik Eng, 44, of Sibu.

The apparent suicide was discovered around 8.45am when a foreign university student staying at the service apartment at Green Road heard a loud thud, and peered out his window to see a woman’s body on the roof of the main entrance.

He immediately alerted staff members at the front counter who said they were aware of what had happened as they too heard the loud sound themselves.

A police team led by district chief ACP Mun Kock Keong arrived at the scene to investigate the death and later established via CCTV recording that the victim had leapt to her death from the 20th floor.

According to a source, the recording showed Wong wandering around the service apartment before heading to the top floor, where she subsequently climbed out of a window and jumped.

Police later found a pair of sandals and a handphone believed to be the victim’s at the foot of the window where she had jumped.

It was believed Wong had been recently sent here from Sibu to undergo psychiatric evaluation at Sentosa Hospital, and was supposed to have returned last Thursday.

Meanwhile, Mun told reporters that the case had been classified as sudden death and that a post mortem would be carried out.
He also said police would attempt to locate the victim’s next-of-kin via the contacts in her handphone.
