MIRI: A jealous husband in Miri attempted to slash his wife with a parang on the first day of the New Year.

The jobless man in his 30s became enraged at about 1pm in his house at Taman Ceria, Tudan here after suspecting his wife was having an affair with another man.

He was drunk when the incident started with him accusing his wife of cheating on him.

He grabbed a parang and tried to slash her but was stopped by their neighbours.

Fearing for her safety, the wife called the police.

A police party rushed to the scene and arrested the man.

The suspect has been detained at Miri Central Police Station (CPS) for investigation.

In a separate incident, Miri Police arrested the driver of a pirate taxi in Taman Jelita, Taman Tunku after suspecting him of having possession of a stolen vehicle.

The owner of the stolen vehicle, a Proton Saga, was shocked to see his car, reported stolen a month ago, driven by a man at Taman Jelita at about 9am.

He tailed the car in the residential area and saw it stop by the roadside to pick up two passengers.

He called the police.

A patrol car rushed to the scene and stopped the vehicle, but the driver managed to escape on foot, leaving his shocked passengers behind.

They were released after questioning by the police. They said they were merely passengers heading for Bintulu.

Hours later, the car’s owner again spotted the suspect in Taman Jelita after being tipped off by a friend.

This time there was no escape as police nabbed him in his house.
