KUCHING: Pan-Malaysia Lorry Owners’ Association (PMLOA) president Er Sui See said the government should consider with drawing the monopoly of vehicle inspection by Pusat Pemeriksaan Kenderaan Berkomputer Sdn Bhd (Puspakom).

“More companies should be allowed to provide theservice of inspection so that there will be competition.

With competition services will improve and clients will have the choice of which inspection outlet to go to,” Er said at the 25th anniversary dinner of theSarawak Lorries Transport Association (SLTA) at the Civic Centre here on Saturday.

He said in any monopolyoperation, clients are left with no choice in terms ofprices to pay, time it takes to get a job done, not to mention having to head to just a single centre thatserves a whole city and its outlaying areas.

“We appeal to thegovernment to allow more than one operators besidesjust Puspakom.

This will give lorry owners or othervehicle owners a choice,” he said.

Er also urged the government to reconsiderthe proposal to fully ban the usage of secondhand spareparts in lorries in 2011.

He said the ban wouldcertainly burden the operators.

“Actually, a lot of spare parts still can be reused. It would be a waste to ban the usage of secondhand spareparts.

We will ask the government to review the proposal,” he said. Apart from that, PMLOAalso requested the government to review theimport duty and sales tax of new heavy vehicles, Er said.

He said since the government wanted allheavy vehicles in the nation to meet the environmental standard, therefore, it wouldbe wise for the governmentto provide financial supportso that lorry operators could replace their old vehicles.
