Foreigner gets jail, fine for illegal lottery tickets

MIRI: An Indonesian man was sentenced to 10 days’ jail and fined RM1,000, in default two months’ imprisonment, by a magistrates’ court here for being in possession of illegal lottery tickets.The accused, Mohammad Sholeh, 41, of Surabaya, Indonesia, pleaded guilty to committing the offence under Section 9 of the Open Gaming Act 1953 on Dec 27 at a canteen in Kuala Baram.

The offence carries a maximum fine of RM5,000, or imprisonment, or both, upon conviction.

In mitigation, he appealed for leniency as it was his first offence.

Inspector Mohd Khairi Mohd Noor prosecuted before Magistrate Nasrul Hadi Abdul Ghani, who also ordered the accused to be referred to the Immigration Department for deportation after completing his jail time.
