Papers face high turnover of reporters

KOTA KINABALU: Newspapers in Sabah are facing high turnover of reporters who are switching employers or leaving the journalistic world for good. While it is easy for these reporters to make the move, the local newspapers are the ones at the losing end especially when talented media practitioners are hard to come by.

Presently, there are three local newspapers in Sabah — Daily Express, The Borneo Post (Sabah) and The New Sabah Times — and many of the state’s veteran media practitioners’ careers have revolved among the three employers.

And some of the reporters had switched from local to international media as well.

The change of employers is often the natural progression of the working life of a reporter who seeks better career prospects, pay and avenues to better express his/her journalistic flair.

A survey among 10 journalists selected randomly in Sabah on why they moved to other publishers pointed that all respondents had only one common motive — career advancement. — Bernama
