SIBU: The government is planning to build four more polyclinics here under the Tenth Malaysia Plan (10MP).

Second Finance Minister and Minister of Environment and Public Health Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh said Teku, Sibu Jaya, Kemuyang and Sungai Bidut would have one each.

He said it was to accommodate the increasing number of patients at Oya Road and Lanang Road polyclinics.

Speaking at the official launch of state’s first 1Malaysia clinic at Teku Bazaar here yesterday, he said for the Sibu Jaya polyclinic, they have identified the location.

“We are just waiting for the approval (from the authority concerned),” he said.

On the Teku 1Malaysia Clinic, he said about 10,000 families in Taman Indah Teku, Kampung Bahagia Jaya, Pasai, Rantau Panjang and Sungai Merah would benefit from it.

Hence, Wong, who is Bawang Assan assemblyman, hoped the clinic would also be open on Saturday and Sunday.

Starting Dec 29 last year, the clinic has been operating from 10am till 10pm Monday to Friday. It is closed on Saturday and Sunday and public holidays.

On Teku as the location for the clinic, he said it was selected due to the density of the population and the fact that there is no health clinic in the area.

“Besides providing minor and outpatient services to the locals we hope this clinic could help to dease overcrowding at the polyclinics in the town area,” he said.

Deputy Minister of Transport Datuk Robert Lau, his wife Kapitan Datin Janet Lau, Sibu divisional health officer Dr Mohd Rais Abdullah, Sibu Resident

Sim Kok Kee, Pelawan assemblyman Vincent Goh and Nangka  assemblyman Datuk Awang Bemee Awang Ali Basah were among those attended the opening ceremony of the clinic.
