Offer courses sought by foreign students: Khaled

KUALA LUMPUR: Private Higher Learning Institutions (IPTS) in the country should offer  courses sought by foreign students, said Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin.

Khaled urged private IPTS to take their request into consideration and offer courses that cater for the needs of foreign  students, especially courses in the field of engineering, to achieve the targeted 75,000 foreign students intake next year, compared with 70,000 in 2009.

“Most private IPTS are just offering easy courses like Business Administration, Information and Communications Technology as well as  Social Sciences and these courses are not popular among foreign students.

“Those who come here seek engineering courses in polytechnics.

“We know that 120,000 applications are received for such  courses but only 30,000 places are offered, basically to local students,” he told reporters after presenting Star Education Fund to 46 private institutes of higher learning here yesterday.

The RM13.8 million Star Education Fund was distributed to 46 local and foreign IPTS, including
