DALAT: The local police are trying to recover a parang used in a fight that resulted in the death of a 16-year-old boy in Sungai Kut last SaturdayTheir chief DSP Martin Koo when contacted said the parang was brought by the boy, Dick Collin Kumeng, when he stood up to a man, his two sons and their cousin in a fight last Thursday night.

After the fight, one of the suspects threw the weapon into Sungai Kut, he said.

“We must get the weapon as it was used  in  the  alleged crime,” he said, adding that a post mortem on Dick would be done today.

The police believe an SMS text from Dick to the girlfriend of one of the suspects sparked the attack that led to his death.

Koo said Dick was believed to be wooing the girlfriend of his 18-year-old rival.

“When he saw the SMS message, the angry boy and his cousin went to meet Dick on the plank-walk in front of a shop in Sungai Kut on Thursday night.”

Koo said they beat Dick up and warned him to stop wooing the girl.

Dick did not heed the warning and returned with a parang, raring for a fight.

He told his attackers to meet him at the same place.

The rival this time brought not only his cousin, but also his father and younger brother.

Dick was beaten up again, this time with a mop handle and a belt.

They also punched and kicked him.

Next morning when he woke up, he felt a sharp pain in his body.

His mother took him to Dalat Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Koo said the four suspects are now under a seven-day detention order pending the completion of investigation into the case.

He said the police might have to remand them further.
