KUCHING: De Bamboo Leaf Cafe, specialising in Teochew cuisine will open its doors today. The cafe is owned by four siblings Lily Teo, Johnny Teo, Frederick Teo and Sharon Teo, who are the fourth generation of restaurant operators in the family.

“My father (Teo Pheng Kwang) who recently retired, operated Chia Heng Restaurant for many years after my grandfather. My great grandfather used the name ‘Chia Heng’  to sell Teochew porridge in 1936 when he first arrived from China,” said Lily, the eldest of the four siblings.

“We wanted to preserve the legacy of Chia Heng after my father retired so my brothers and sisters and myself decided to work together and open a restaurant under a new name,” she explained.

According to Lily, the restaurant does not serve pork and is in the process of applying for a halal licence so that Muslims too can enjoy the wonders of Teochew cuisine. The restaurant also offers catering services for Chinese and Muslim food.

“Our specialty is Teochew cuisine so we offer Teochew porridge. Our porridge is different from others as we use fresh ingredients to make condiments as opposed to canned condiments. Another must-have in a Teochew restaurant is of course the oyster pancake.”

The cafe is open from 8am to 10pm daily.

The famous Teochew porridge is served from 8am to 11am and from 11am to 2pm, the cafe will serve set lunches. The cafe is closed from 2pm to 5pm. Dinner is served from 5pm onwards.
