MIRI: Parents must not allow their children to swim or play in the flood water as it is not a wading pool.

Miri police chief (OCPD) Jamaluddin Ibrahim gave this advice to riverine dwellers in Miri division yesterday.

“The rising water makes it dangerous for children to play.

“Therefore parents of those residing along the river should be watchful of their children’s activities,” Jamaluddin said.

Speaking to reporters here, Jamaluddin said they are ready to mobilise personnel to assist the authorities in flood evacuation operation including search-and-rescue.

He was referring to the rising water level in Ulu Niah and Batu Niah following heavy rain in the division in the last couple of days.

Low-lying areas in Rumah Ranggong and Rumah Belilie in Ulu Niah and Kampung Iran in Niah were reported to be flooded.

According to Jamaluddin, they together with other authorities are monitoring the situation. Police personnel will only be mobilised when evacuation is necessary.
