Umno’s counters to register voters, new members at programmes

KUALA LIPIS: Umno will open counters to register voters and new members at all Juara Rakyat (Champion of the People) programmes nationwide to increase its members and enable them to vote in the coming general election.

Umno information chief Datuk Ahmad Maslan said there were more than 4.38 million individuals over the age of 21 who had yet to register as voters.

Of the total, 2.85 million or 65 per cent were Bumiputera, he said.

“We want them to register so that they can vote in elections,” he said in Sungai Koyan near here.

He said of the country’s 27 million population, only 11.7 million were registered as voters.

“Lack of awareness on their responsibility to vote is among the factors for their failure to register as voters,” he said.

Ahmad also said Umno would intensify the Juara Rakyat programme in all 191 Umno divisions, with each Supreme Council members adopting five divisions.

“The five divisions are chosen from five states, three of them comprising seats won by Barisan Nasional and the other two are the seats it lost,” he said. — Bernama
