Warnings of heavy rain, strong winds and rough seas

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Meteorological Department has issued a heavy rain warning (orange stage) with intermittent occasionally heavy rain occurring from time to time over Sandakan (Kinabatangan District), Sabah until tomorrow (Jan 18).

If such condition prevails for a long period, it may cause landslides and floods in low-lying areas and near the river banks.

The department also issued a Yellow stage warning, of intermittent rain, occasionally moderate from time to time, over Sandakan (Beluran and Tongod Districts), West Coast (Ranau, Kota Belud, Tuaran, Kota Kinabalu, Penampang and Papar Districts), Kudat (Kota Marudu District) and Interior Divisions (Tambunan, Keningau, Tenom and Beaufort Districts) until Monday.

The department also issued a warning on strong winds and rough seas caused by strong East/Northeasterly winds reaching speeds of 60 kmph with waves up to 5.5 metres over the waters off Condore, Reef North, Layang-Layang and Palawan are expected to continue until Friday (Jan 22).

This condition are dangerous to all coastal and shipping activities including workers on oil platform.

In Peninsular Malaysia, East/Northeasterly winds of 50-60 kmph with waves up to 4.5 metres over the waters off Samui (Kelantan and Terengganu), Tioman (Pahang and East Johore), Sabah, Labuan F.T, Sarawak, Bunguran, Reef South, Sulu and Sulawesi are expected to continue until Friday (Jan 22).

In addition, the coastal areas of East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia (Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang and East Johor) are vulnerable to sea level rise during the same period and dangerous to all shipping and coastal activities including fishing and ferry services. — Bernama
