BELURAN: The Beluran Fishermen Association has asked the Fisheries Department to lift the freeze on traditional fishing licence for about 2,000 fishermen in the district. Its chairman Jaini Ating said without the licence, traditional fishermen would not be entitled to government aid.

“Many people in the district are depending on the job to earn a living,” he said after the presentation of a RM200 living allowance to 454 members of the association here yesterday.

He said the freeze had denied about 2,000 traditional fishermen from getting the living allowance, diesel subsidy, fishing gear and loan from the Malaysian Fisheries Development Authority.

The association has 1,200 members, who own traditional fishing licence. — Bernama
