IPOH: After being robbed two years ago, a jewellery shop in Gunung Rapat here lost over RM400,000 in valuables when the shop was broken into early yesterday. The loss was discovered by the store’s manager  Roslan Zakaria, 52, when opening it for business at 8.30am.

Speaking to reporters, Roslan said as he was about to open the shop, the owner of the grocery shop next door told him that a hole had been punched in the adjoining wall of their shops.

“On entering the shop, I was shocked to find a huge hole in the wall … and on further checking, I found several trays of jewellery missing,” he said, adding that the loss was estimated at over RM400,000.

Roslan said he had earlier received a burglary alert on his handphone, which was linked to the shop’s alarm system, but had disregarded it because such alerts before had been false alarms.

He said in October 2008, four men armed with pistols robbed the store of RM500,000 jewellery.

Meanwhile, Ipoh deputy police chief Supt Ibrahim Abu Bakar said the break-in was believed to have happened between midnight and 3am.

He said police believed more than two suspects were involved and that they had broken into a hair salon adjoining the grocery store first and from there made their way into the second shop before drilling the hole in the wall to access the jewellery store.

Ibrahim said police found gloves left behind by the gang.

He urged anyone with information on the case to contact the Ipoh police headquarters at 05-2451500. — Bernama
